E39s aren't that unreliable. At least not in M52/M54 form. The cooling system is their biggest problem, and that can be tackled as a DIY project. And while parts are more expensive than for your Honda, the M52/M54 is shared with the E46, so that helps a bit with both price and availability.

As far as the E-series Mercedes go, the local independent Mercedes mechanic claims that they are the most reliable out of all of the Mercedes. I'm not sure how much that's saying, though. But that one appears to be from before the dark age of Mercedes reliability following the Chrysler merger.
